Phytoteratology

Slovenia / 2016

“Phytoteratology” creates phytopolutants – informational mixtures of human and plant, specifically, between the artist and thale cress. Sexual reproduction as a symbolic representation of sexual difference makes way for the multiplicity of ways of information transfer, and instead of blood relations, it creates a more subtle flow of interspecies mixing. With the help of biotechnical procedures, the artist is reproducing plant-human entities; out of vegetal tissue, she conceives plant embryos, the growth of which she encourages with sexual hormones taken from her own urine. The artist’s hormones are reminding the plant embryos of her presence; as a response, they develop a unique form. ‘Little green monsters’ emerge in the time of political, ecologic and social crisis as beings of leakage, new-borns of agenital intra-action, trans-species communication, translation and mutation of meaning, which unties the future from the reproduction of today.

Project is part of the exhibition Liminal Agents.

Co-production: City of Women and ŠKUC Gallery. In cooperation with Kapelica Gallery.
