POWER – Who Needs Empowerment? Exploring Gender and Power Through/In Art

Power is unequally distributed among people in all societies: individuals have varying influence on decision-making, different rights, and responsibilities. Social gender is one dimension that seems to be associated with the organization of this unequal distribution of power, with women typically occupying lower positions and having less power than men, regardless of different time periods and locations. Over the next four years, five partner organizations from Spain, Italy, France, and Slovenia will focus on raising awareness of how social gender is connected to power.

The POWER project aims to offer young people creative and engaging ways to understand concepts related to social gender, to raise awareness of how gender is connected to power: how individuals still experience discrimination and oppression due to their sexual identity, to develop understanding, empathy, and solidarity with others who have different types of gender identities and sexual orientations, in order to challenge the oppression they face. Through a three-step process using informal and participatory methods based on art, we will develop skills to communicate about gender-related inequalities and challenges, providing youth workers and leaders with a comprehensive toolkit to address issues of gender and power in a safe and appealing manner.

You can use the materials yourself and relate them to the subject matter, but above all, deepen the discussion among young people about various aspects of (in)equality. If you would like the authors of the materials to conduct a creative workshop at your institution, please contact Sara Šabec, Head of Cultural and Artistic Education at City of Women: sara.sabec@cityofwomen.org.
